Leon Draisaitl, Oilers clip Wings in OT

Leon Draisaitl scored in overtime to cap a two-goal, three-point performance on his 29th birthday and give the visiting Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.

Evan Bouchard scored once and added an assist while Mattias Ekholm and Connor McDavid each tallied two helpers for Edmonton. Goaltender Calvin Pickard made 24 saves as the Oilers opened a four-game road trip with a win.

Draisaitl completed an Edmonton comeback when he redirected Ekholm’s pass 18 seconds into overtime for his sixth goal of the season.

Andrew Copp collected one goal and one assist and J.T. Compher added a marker for the Red Wings, who have dropped two straight games. Patrick Kane collected two assists and goalie Cam Talbot stopped 31 shots.

Twice the Red Wings led, but they could not hold either edge.

Compher opened the scoring at the 3:28 mark of the first period. He was alone in the slot when Kane sent a no-look pass to him. Compher then blasted a top-corner one-timer for his third goal of the season.

Draisaitl replied with a birthday goal that was indeed a gift at 8:46 of the second period. He sent a puck to the front of the net from a sharp angle, and it ricocheted off the skate of Detroit defenseman Olli Maatta and went into the cage.

Draisaitl has collected five goals and four assists during a six-game point streak.

Copp broke the 1-1 deadlock 42 seconds later. He was in the slot when Jeff Petry fired a point shot and managed to deflect just enough of the puck for it to elude Pickard for his fourth goal of the season.

Bouchard again pulled the Oilers even at 10:47 of the third period by blasting a one-timer from the point that found the mark through a screen. It was his third marker of the campaign.
