Casey Mize stellar in debut, Tigers beat M’s again

Casey Mize allowed one hit over 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his season debut as the Detroit Tigers defeated the host Seattle Mariners 4-1 on Tuesday night.Riley Greene went 2-for-4 with a double and home run for the Tigers, who haven’t trailed in claiming the first two games of the three-game series.Mize, a right-hander who was the first overall selection in the 2018 MLB Draft, allowed a leadoff single to Victor Robles in the first inning and, an out later, walked Cal Raleigh.Mize proceeded to retire the next 14 batters before issuing a leadoff walk to No. 9 hitter J.P. Crawford in the sixth. Mize got Robles to line into a double play to first baseman Spencer Torkelson to erase Crawford. Mize just missed low and away on a 3-2 sweeping breaking ball to Julio Rodriguez to end his night. It was Mize’s third walk against six strikeouts.Tigers relievers Beau Brieske, Will Vest and Tommy Kahnle combined for 3 1/3 hitless innings to finish off the one-hitter. Kahnle worked the ninth for the save.Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert (0-1) took the loss. Gilbert — the 14th overall pick in 2018 — gave up three runs on five hits in five innings with one walk and 10 strikeouts.The Tigers scored multiple runs in the first inning for the second consecutive night.
